A new world order for tanker shipping

Riviera Maritime Media’s Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference returns November 9-10 to Athens.

We have themed our event A new world order for tanker shipping and our programme thoroughly analyses the market forces, regulation and geo-politics driving new tanker industry approaches on innovation and technology, carriage of cargo and competitive advantage.

Programme development has been led by Riviera’s executive editor Edwin Lampert, Tanker Shipping & Trade brand manager Paul Dowling, and reflects wide consultation and engagement with the industry.

Premier event to attract a premier gathering

Vessel operators, terminal operators, charterers, regulators, class, the supply chain, and the maritime service industry, including lawyers, financiers, brokers and other interests will gather to benchmark industry knowledge, build business relationships and gain a competitive edge in all of the aspects that make for successful and sustainable tanker operations.

Our sessions will cover the following areas:

  • The Tanker Shipping & Trade Big Picture
  • Regulations. Risk. Reward
  • How tankers owners can navigate decarbonisation regulations and future proof their fleets
  • Our decarbonisation journey
  • SIRE 2.0 is here: understand the implications for vetting and inspections
  • The human factor
  • The future proofed tanker that wins charters

There will additionally be an Inmarsat-led roundtable discussion.

A rewarding experience

Our programme also sees the return of The Tanker Shipping & Trade Awards. These are highly coveted and their presentation at the gala dinner at the end of day one is always a conference high-point. This year we will be celebrating industry excellence across the following five categories.

  • Environmental Award
  • Tanker of the Year
  • Tanker Operator of The Year
  • Industry Leader
  • Lifetime Achievement

Meeting, making and renewing business contacts

Our programme allows for significant networking including meeting, renewing and making new industry contacts. Our exhibition is the ideal forum to market products and services to the industry’s decision makers. Our dinner the perfect social setting for cementing new and existing business relations.

Awards

Linked InTwitterFacebookeCard

Congratulations to all of our Tanker Shipping & Trade Award winners, read more about them here.

This year’s awards took place on Wednesday 9 November in Greece at the Radisson Blu Park Hotel, Athens.

The Tanker Shipping and Trade Awards are the only awards recognising excellence across the Tanker industry. There are five award categories: Environmental Award, Tanker of the Year, Tanker Operator of the Year, Industry Leader Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award.

If you are interested in sponsoring an award or the gala dinner at next year’s event, please contact Paul Dowling, Brand Manager, at paul.dowling@rivieramm.com

Environmental Award

Recognises an individual, company or institution that has found a solution to an environmental challenge or problem within the tanker industry.

Winner

Yara Marine: FuelOpt

FuelOpt maximises fuel savings through energy efficiency and is compatible with any marine fuel. The system adapts propulsive power to changing environmental conditions and erases costly variations in speed and power. FuelOpt offers dynamic pitch and RPM optimisation that regulates propeller pitch and engine RPM separately.

Congratulations to the other shortlisted companies:

RWO: The OWS-PT

The OWS-PT is an innovative new ‘pressure type’ OWS specifically developed for large vessels, including VLCCs. Its compact and flexible design is a direct response to feedback from shipowners and follows research into new ship designs which exposed the lack of space next to bilge water holding tanks where an OWS is traditionally installed

Berg Propulsion: MPC800 control system

Berg Propulsion MPC800 control system delivers significant efficiency gains for controllable pitch (CP) propellers and thrusters on tankers. A retrofit project on two 2008-built tankers with 14 knot services speeds delivered significant fuel and emissions savings. Such vessels are typically optimised for higher engine loads but without such a control system risk running at inefficient ‘part loads’.

Sponsored by:

Tanker of the Year Award

Recognises a tanker delivered since November 2021 and engaged in bulk liquid transportation that sets new benchmarks in one, more or all of the following areas: design, environmental, operational, safety and technical performance

Winner

AET

Vessel: Eagle Valence

The 300,000 dwt Eagle Valence is the world’s first LNG dual-fuel VLCC. The vessel can run on LNG, powered by a WIN GD 7x82 dual-fuel engine. The vessel exceeds the EEDI Phase 2 reference line by more than 20% and supports AET’s goal of a 40% reduction in Annual Efficiency Ratio Greenhouse Gas (GHG) intensity by 2030 (baseline 2008) and Net-Zero GHG Emission Commitment by 2050.

Congratulations to the other shortlisted companies:

Knutsen Group

Vessel: Frida Knutsen

First dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) shuttle tanker to be chartered to Italian energy giant Eni. Green tanker equipped with a Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) recovery system and an energy storage system for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Proman Stena Bulk

Vessel: Stena Pro Patria

The Stena Pro Patria send the message that methanol is a reliable and available marine fuel that can reduce global shipping emissions. A state-of-the-art, IMOIIMeMAX dual-fuel MR tanker expected to run on 12,500 tonnes of methanol marine fuel per annum and cut NOx emissions by 60% compared with conventional marine fuels.

Avin International Ltd

Vessel: Kriti Future

The first ammonia-fuel ready vessel in the world, the ABS-classed Suezmax tanker was delivered to owners Avin International Ltd, flying the Greek Flag in February. The vessel also meets the ABS LNG Fuel Ready Level 1 requirements.

Advantage Tankers LLC

Vessel: Advantage Verdict

This LR-classed vessel is nominated for the integration of a breakthrough new LNG tank system; a Type C tank utilising High Manganese Steel. The second in a series under construction at Korea's DSME.

Sponsored by:

Tanker Operator of the Year Award

Recognises a tanker operating company that has set new industry benchmarks / broken new ground since November 2021. This could be through responding innovatively to challenging markets, pioneering new approaches, challenging old orthodoxies, and setting new standards in day-to-day operations.

Winner

Hafnia

Hafnia is the world’s largest operators of product and chemical tankers. Its in-house technical management team have a solid track record with all major charterers and a “zero harm” policy. In the first half of 2022, Hafnia became the world's largest chemical fleet provider. Hafnia balances commercial leadership with industry leading ESG and employee programmes.

Congratulations to the other shortlisted companies:

Capital Ship Management Corporation

For environmental and safety leadership including piloting the use of biofuel-blended marine fuel on Capital managed 300k DWT crude tanker, Apollonas; industry-wide studies into the use of ammonia as a marine fuel and six tankers under its management entering the US Coast Guard QualShip 21 programme

Arcadia Shipmanagement

For setting impressive safety and CSR standards including an exemplary Port State Control record which has been recognised as outstanding by major charterers as well as classification societies ABS and DNV and philanthropic activities in the natural world and wider society

Columbia Shipmanagement:

The Columbia Shipmanagement's Hellas Tanker Management Centre of Excellence opened earlier this year. The project is one of its most ambitious collaborations of 2022, and will see ship owners, oil majors, classification societies, cargo interests and technology experts combining to deliver continued excellence across the Greek tanker owning sector.
