A consultation process has been initiated for a huge Swedish offshore wind project that could generate a fifth of the country’s current requirement for electricity
The Sylen offshore windfarm is being developed by Svea Vind Offshore and is located 10 km outside Söderhamn and about 11 km outside Hudiksvall.
The area is in Sweden’s economic zone outside territorial waters and would require 347 wind turbines with a maximum height of 350 m.
Svea Vind Offshore Sylen project manager Emelie Johansson said, “Sylen is one of the larger windfarms planned in the Baltic Sea and be a milestone for electrification. More renewable electricity is a prerequisite for industry and for Sweden’s competitiveness with other countries.”
The project area is consistent with areas identified in the marine plan for the Gulf of Bothnia that was agreed by the Swedish government in 2022. The area also complies with the Norwegian Maritime and Water Authority’s newly updated marine.
Consultations began with the County Administrative Board began in early 2023. For the windfarm to be built, a permit is required under the Swedish Economic Zone Act and the Continental Shelf Act.
Svea Vind Offshore believes once the require permits are in place, the windfarm could begin delivering renewable electricity from 2033 onwards.
