Spanish independent power producer Greenalia has initiated a process to develop four small-scale floating windfarms offshore Gran Canaria, the second most populous island in the Canary islands
The company said the four floating windfarms, for which it has filed project and environmental applications, would be added to its 50-MW Gofio project off the southeastern part of Gran Canaria. It said that project “has advanced significantly in recent months in its permitting process.”
The new windfarms – Dunas, Mojo, Cardon and Guanche – would be independent projects with an installed power of 50 MW each. They will be built in the vicinity of the Gofio windfarm, which Greenalia plans to build in an area with some of the highest wind resources in Europe. The company believes that the Canary Islands “are the ideal platform for deployment of floating wind technology in Spain.
Each project will consist of four 12.5-MW turbines on floating foundations, anchored to the seabed in water depths of between 61 m and 92 m.
If the projects all go ahead, it would make for a significant increase in Greenalia’s portfolio of offshore wind projects, with 250 MW power in the Canary Islands alone. Scale effect should result in a significant reduction in the levelised cost of energy from the projects.
The floating windfarms would also play an important role helping to decarbonise energy generation in the Canary Islands.
