Independent power producer Greenalia has submitted a plan for a floating offshore windfarm off the island of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands
The company has submitted a project and environmental planning application for the 50-MW Parque Eólico Gofio project, which it hopes to build off the southeast coast of Gran Canaria Island, close to the port of Arinaga.
The company said it plans to use a quartet of 12.5-MW offshore wind turbines on floating foundations. It said the project is located in an area with one of the highest wind resources in Europe. The company did not identify what kind of foundation it was hoping to use or identify the turbine.
Galicia-based Greenalia said it believes the project will have significant economic benefits to the island and could help unlock the potential for offshore wind off the coast of Spain. The project could also provide significant benefits for suppliers in Galicia.
It said Parque Eólico Gofio would provide sufficient electricity for around 70,000 households and would avoid the equivalent of 140,000 tonnes on CO2 per year from fossil fuels.
“Construction and operation of Parque Eólico Gofio will contribute to green development in the Canary islands and help meet the 310-MW marine renewable energy target established by the Canary Government in 2017,” the company said.
