A Swedish port in the Gulf of Bothnia has invested in an ice-breaking tugboat with CRP azimuth thrusters to maintain maritime traffic year-round
The Swedish port of Lulea in the Gulf of Bothnia has taken delivery of an azimuth stern drive (ASD) ice-breaking harbour tug to maintain year-round navigation and ship towage, even in harsh winter conditions.
Victoria was built by Damen’s Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam to its ASD Tug 3413 ICE design with two Steerprop SP 60 ECO azimuth propulsors, each with contra-rotating propellers (CRP) rated at 3,700 kW and certified to 1A Super ice class.
This 34-m tug has a beam of 13 m, a maximum speed of 14 knots and a bollard pull of 73 tonnes ahead and 69 tonnes astern. It can maintain 8 knots through 1.1-m thick floe ice or 3 knots through 1.1 m first-year ice which is important for year-round operations in Arctic harbours.
The Port of Lulea ordered the vessel to keep this gateway to the Scandinavian Arctic open during winter months as the harbour accommodates more cargo and cruise ships.
Steerprop’s advanced propulsion units combine pushing and pulling propellers within a single unit, delivering high manoeuvrability, ice performance and energy efficiency in harsh ice conditions and open water navigation.
Victoria is the second ice-class project for which Steerprop has supplied CRP propulsors for a Damen-built vessel, said Steerprop director of sales and project management Juho Rekola.
“This vessel design was driven by the customer’s need for exceptional ice performance in the most demanding Arctic conditions,” he said. “They needed a propulsion solution they could rely on to operate efficiently and safely through heavy ice.”
The SP 60 ECO azimuth propulsors on Victoria have two smaller contra-rotating propellers instead of a single large one, which Steerprop said minimises rotational losses and improves propulsion efficiency.
“Our CRP technology offered not only advanced engineering, but a purpose-built answer to their specific operational challenge,” said Mr Rekola. “The result is a vessel designed from the keel up for robust, year-round Arctic service.”
Steerprop said its CRP ECO propulsors deliver a 10–17% improvement in net thrust due to optimised blade ratios, pitch and rotational speed.
“An enhanced lubrication concept further contributes to increased efficiency and long-term operational reliability.”
