Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering (MMHE) has formalised a partnership with HD Hyundai Marine Solutions (HD HMS) to advance maritime decarbonisation through green retrofits, meeting stringent regulatory standards
The partnership, established September 2024, seeks to address increasing regulatory requirements, such as the EU Emissions Trading System and IMO’s Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index, which demands lower emissions from vessels.
MMHE, a subsidiary of Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Berhad, has more than 50 years of experience in ship repair and retrofitting. The company has a significant track record in LNG carrier repairs and is recognised for its engineering solutions across the maritime sector.
By collaborating with HD HMS, MMHE aims to leverage advanced technologies to help vessel owners meet compliance standards while reducing their carbon footprint.
MMHE managing director and chief executive Mohd Nazir Mohd Nor said, "This collaboration aligns perfectly with MMHE’s strategy to diversify our portfolio by balancing traditional and clean energy opportunities."
He added the partnership combines MMHE’s extensive experience with HD HMS’s innovative technologies, positioning them to contribute to the maritime industry’s decarbonisation efforts.
MMHE has handled several complex LNG carrier repair and retrofit projects in the last five years, demonstrating its capability in this specialised sector. Among the vessels serviced are LNG carriers Madrid Spirit, Gas Summit, Velikiy Novgorod, and BW Brussels, all of which underwent significant repairs and retrofitting in 2019.
These projects involved tasks such as special surveys, ballast water treatment system installations, exhaust gas cleaning system installations, and engine overhauls, which are essential for compliance with evolving environmental regulations.
The partnership with HD HMS is part of MMHE’s broader strategy to enhance its service offerings in response to the growing need for sustainable maritime operations. The addition of a third drydock at MMHE’s facility further increases its capacity to handle large vessels, including the next generation of LNG carriers, FPSOs and other significant maritime assets.
Mr Nazir expressed confidence in the collaboration, noting it would "significantly contribute to our customers’ decarbonisation efforts, propelling the maritime industry toward more sustainable practices."
The partnership reflects MMHE’s ongoing commitment to supporting the maritime industry through sustainable practices and compliance with international environmental standards. By focusing on green retrofit solutions, MMHE and HD HMS aim to play a crucial role in the global shift towards a low-carbon maritime sector.
Decarbonisation in the LNG industry is a subject at the next LNG Shipping & Terminals Conference, which takes place in November 2024. Register here for more details.
