Using weather routeing software to optimise voyages

The onboard platform comes with an updated route network enabling a greater ability to create optimised routes through open waters to avoid adverse weather and sea conditions, or take advantage of prevailing winds.

DTN has also increased routeing options within restricted waters. This helps ship operators plot ship passages while managing shipping costs, fuel consumption, safety and sustainability. Optimised weather routeing helps operators overcome these challenges and operational hurdles.

It also enables shipping companies to develop the optimal route for every voyage, based on unique key performance indicators.

SPOS brings together weather forecasts, sea conditions and the ship’s specific characteristics and cargo, as well as speed-fuel curves, to calculate the most efficient and safest route.

This software enables captains to safely navigate worldwide with minimal fuel consumption and emissions by calculating and recalculating optimum routes and anticipating oncoming weather and sea conditions.

DTN has also updated SPOS with attributes complementing the new fuel types to further support implementation of IMO 2020 legislation capping sulphur levels in fuel and emissions.
