A partnership has formed in British Columbia to enhance tug master and pilot simulator training to improve the safety of ship escorting, manoeuvring and docking
Kotug International’s training and consultancy division has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) to provide training for masters, officers and crew working on escort tugs and for pilots employing them to assist ships in Canada.
Certified tug master trainers from Kotug will work in BCIT’s marine campus in North Vancouver, where there is a full maritime simulator suite. Kotug will provide joint pilot and tug master training using network-connected simulators to improve the safety of ship escorting, manoeuvring and docking.
This is increasingly desired by authorities, port and terminal operators and shipowners to minimise incidents when ships are entering and exiting harbours.
“This partnership represents a significant step forward in strengthening Canada’s maritime workforce,” said BCIT School of Transportation dean, Steve Perry. “We are equipping mariners with the critical skills needed to safely and efficiently navigate an evolving industry, while supporting the growth of local talent.”
“Canada is a key growth market, and with its modern facilities, BCIT meets our high standards for training,” said Kotug Training & Consultancy director Patrick Everts. “Our training method combines three components, classroom training, simulator training and onboard training. This proven didactic approach delivers the best results, preparing students for both expected and unexpected real-life situations.”
This strategic partnership with BCIT enhances Kotug Canada’s ability to locally train crews in British Columbia.
Kotug Canada is a joint venture between Kotug International and Horizon Maritime. BCIT has over 60 years of educating and training maritime workforces in British Columbia.
“This partnership creates valuable local career opportunities, including for current and future indigenous seafarers, with whom Kotug Canada is proud to collaborate,” said Kotug Canada business development manager Laurens Korporaal.
