France’s Opsealog was able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to offshore support vessel (OSV) operations by 10% in 2019 through using its vessel monitoring and performance management services with oil and gas companies
Monitoring over 400 vessels worldwide, Opsealog aims to reduce even more of the environmental impacts of vessel operations in 2020 by promoting good practices and assuring procedure compliance.
“The successful results we attained in 2019 are equivalent to 10 days of carbon-neutral activities per vessel per year,” said Opsealog chief executive and co-founder Arnaud Dianoux. “When projected to a global fleet of a major E&P company that number could reach over a 1,000. This exceptional performance was possible only due to the implementation on a global scale of Marinelog, our performance management service as well as our clients’ commitment.” Added Mr Dianoux, “The tool and service provided by Opsealog enables oil and gas operators to boost marine offshore operations efficiency by improving operational practices on four use cases: fuel efficiency, fleet utilisation, environmental impact, and cost control.”
Oil and gas companies are under increasing regulatory and societal pressure to reduce CO2 and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from their exploration and production (E&P) activities, while maximising production to meet the increasing demand for energy.
Most CO2 and GHG emissions from OSV operations are generated by their diesel engines. Since OSVs have different operational profiles and different engine configurations, accurately measuring their environmental impact can be tricky.
Opsealog said it is not only essential to understand the operations vessels are carrying out, but also to have a precise appreciation of how they are executing them. Vessels are not usually required to provide in-depth reports on how they use their resources. Therefore, it is difficult for oil and gas operators to have an accurate global picture of the resource utilisation of their fleets.
That is changing. Opsealog’s cloud-based platform Marinelog allows customers to take advantage of the data already available, helping marine logistics departments improve their decision making.
Marinelog collects and integrates data from multiple sources (fuel monitoring systems, onboard reporting software, weather, and vessel tracking). Opsealog analyses the data and provides recommendations. Through regular efficiency meetings, Opsealog’s account managers provide recommendations to E&P clients on how to improve vessel operational performance. The improvement of the vessels’ operational behaviour is measured by algorithms and translated into key performance indicators available in a web application and periodic reports.
An environmental feature in Marinelog allows affiliates and head offices of oil and gas companies to better report environmental results internally and externally. Opsealog’s performance management and analysis enable operators to measure and reduce the atmospheric impacts of specific activities and assess improvements between different periods.
Marinelog solutions and services have been shortlisted for the OSJ Innovation of the Year Award.
