A Brazilian subsidiary of Norwegian offshore engineering and construction group Aker Solutions has suffered a cyber attack, disabling its IT systems
Cyber criminals directed an attack on offshore services company CSE, said Aker Solutions 14 February, and the “attackers claim they have entered the IT systems, encrypted digital files and locked access to data.”
In response to the attack, Aker Solutions temporarily shut down most of the IT systems used in the CSE business entity.
As of 17 February, these systems remain shut down and the company continues to work to resolve the problems, according to an Aker Solutions spokesman. So far, there are no indications other parts of Aker Solutions’ IT systems have been infected.
“Aker Solutions is working to contain and neutralise the attack, but does not yet know the full extent of the situation,” the Oslo-listed company said in a statement.
Its global IT organisation is working to resolve the situation together with external expertise. Aker Solutions notified authorities in Brazil and carried out immediate mitigating actions, including shutting down CSE’s IT systems.
“Aker Solutions is doing its outmost to limit impact on employees, customers and other partners,” it said.
CSE’s main business is providing maintenance and modification services to oil and gas installations offshore Brazil.
State-run Petrobras and international energy companies are the main clients of CSE’s offshore services in Brazil’s booming oil and gas sector.
