Leon Patitsas-led Atlas Maritime has reportedly placed a new order for a Suezmax tanker in South Korea, a vessel type that has proven especially popular among Greek shipowners this year
On 30 September, Daehan Shipbuilding disclosed a single-vessel contract worth about US$87M, with delivery scheduled by the end of the first half of 2027. Shipbroking and market sources have linked the order to Atlas Maritime, noting that the company is once again partnering with European Maritime Finance (EMF).
Atlas and EMF have cooperated on multiple newbuilding projects over the years, spanning tankers, very large ammonia carriers (VLACs), and pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs).
According to Atlas Maritime’s website, its fleet currently includes 13 tankers, four PCTCs, and three VLACs, comprising both newbuildings and vessels under third-party ownership.
When it comes to Suezmaxes, Atlas is now constructing eight vessels at Daehan for delivery through 2027. Earlier this year, shipbrokers reported that Atlas had profitably resold four newbuild Suezmaxes, though the deal has yet to be confirmed.
The company has a reputation for opportunistic asset plays. In 2025, Atlas and EMF sold two PCTCs to Noatum Maritime – the shipping arm of AD Ports Group – realising an estimated profit of nearly US$60M.
Greeks drive Suezmax ordering bonanza
Riviera reported in September that between January and August 2025, shipowners placed 35 Suezmax tanker orders, of which Greek companies accounted for 27, or a commanding 77%. By comparison, in the same period of 2024, 39 Suezmax orders were placed worldwide, with Greek owners responsible for 21 (54%).
Among the most active Greek players this year are Dynacom Tankers, Evalend Shipping, New Shipping, and Centrofin Management.
According to Xclusiv Shipbrokers, about 35% of the existing Suezmax fleet is 16 years or older, highlighting the sector’s need for renewal. Meanwhile, the orderbook-to-fleet ratio currently stands at roughly 18%.
