HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Avikus have secured an approval in principle (AiP) from Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR) and a design verification report (DVR) from DNV for its autonomous navigation system HiNAS Control
HiNAS Control uses artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality to integrate data from various navigation devices to autonomously avoid navigational hazards while maintaining optimal routes and speeds. It helps navigators to reduce the risk of collisions during voyages and improves fuel efficiency to lower consumption and emissions.
In its evaluation of these new innovations, DNV used its class guidelines for autonomous ships (DNV-CG-0264), and it was based on risk assessments and relevant standards.
“Safety is at the core of what a ship classification society shall support in the maritime industry,” said DNV maritime chief executive Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen.
DNV brought its competence and expertise to complete this design assessment of Avikus and HD Hyundai’s system.
“Leveraging advanced new technologies to give seafarers and the maritime industry new tools to further improve their safety and environmental performance is key for the future of the maritime industry,” said Mr Ørbeck-Nilssen.
LISCR played an important role in approving this cutting-edge navigational technology. “HiNAS Control will play a significant role in the safety, efficiency and the future of the global shipping industry,” said LISCR chief executive Alfonso Castillero.
Avikus senior researcher and product manager Wonchul Yoo presented the latest autonomous navigation technology at Riviera Maritime Media’s TUGTECHNOLOGY ’23 conference.
