Ems Maritime Offshore (EMO) held a naming ceremony for Windea One, a hybrid crew transfer vessel (CTV) for the offshore wind industry, on 1 June 2023
Built by Penguin International, Windea One is 32 m long with a breadth of 10 m and has a draft of almost 2 m. The vessel has four Volvo engines delivering a total of 2,060 kW. It also has Volvo-Danfoss electric motors, each with an output of 180 kW, powered by EST Floattech batteries.
The CTV can achieve a maximum speed of 28 knots and can be operated purely electrically for up to six hours.
The crew consists of three crew members and accommodation is provided for up to 24 offshore wind technicians. The vessel can accommodate four 10-ft containers or two 20-ft containers on the foredeck. In addition to the innovative drive system, the new design has an active fender system which enhances safety when technicians are transferring to and from the vessel to a turbine.
EMO has chartered the vessel to windfarm developer and operator Ørsted.
Windea One is due to start work on the Borkum Riffgrund 1 and Godewind 1 and 2 offshore windfarms.
