Grain LNG becomes the first LNG terminal outside North America to be certified by MiQ for methane emissions transparency, marking a milestone in its emissions management practices
Grain LNG, Europe’s largest LNG receiving terminal, has received methane emissions certification from MiQ, becoming the first LNG port globally and the first facility outside North America to achieve this accreditation.
The announcement was made during the BloombergNEF London Summit.
The terminal, operated by National Grid, was awarded a ‘B’ grade by MiQ, which specialises in methane emissions measurement and certification.
This certification provides transparency for LNG buyers, allowing them to select cargoes based on their methane emissions profile.
MiQ’s third-party verification system is already applied to 20% of US natural gas production.
Through its Supply Chain Protocol, MiQ offers credible estimates of emissions, marking the first time such data is available for LNG purchases.
The certification meets growing demand from UK and European buyers for detailed emissions information related to their LNG imports
Grain LNG is currently being expanded to meet up to 33% of the UK’s gas demand.
This certification comes as the European Union enforces stricter methane emissions regulations, with US producers required to comply by 2027.
MiQ certification will help producers meet these standards by providing reliable, third-party audited emissions data.
MiQ CEO Georges Tijbosch stressed that the certification is a step toward greater transparency in the global LNG supply chain.
National Grid Ventures president Ben Wilson highlighted that this accreditation reflects Grain LNG’s commitment to operational efficiency and leadership in emissions management.
Grain LNG managing director Simon Culkin added that the certification underscores the terminal’s world-class status in both size and environmental performance.
MiQ aims to support the reduction of avoidable methane emissions throughout the natural gas supply chain, contributing to the global transition towards cleaner energy.
