German developer Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW) has confirmed that it has decided not to continue with two UK offshore wind projects, Morgan and Mona, which have a combined capacity of 3 GW
The company is nixing development of the Irish Sea projects – which is was working on with co-developer JERA Nex bp – after it failed to secure a Contract for Difference in the UK’s latest auction for offshore wind, Allocation Round 7 (AR7), results of which were announced on 14 January 2026.
In a statement, EnBW said the primary reason for its decision “is the fact that no government support through the CfD scheme was obtained.”
It also noted that other factors beyond its control, such as a significant increase in costs across the supply chain, lower electricity market prices and higher interest rates, along with project implementation risks “imply that the projects are no longer economically viable.”
Withdrawal from the Morgan and Mona projects will result in an impairment of €1.2Bn in the company’s 2025 annual report.
“EnBW is in the midst of the largest investment programme in its corporate history. The company plans to invest up to €50Bn by 2030,” said the Karlsruhe-based developer.
“Due to the wide range of investment opportunities, EnBW pursues a consistently value-oriented approach. The company has therefore decided to withdraw from both projects under these deteriorating conditions.”
Responding to questions from OWJ, JERA Nex bp said it “has its own strategy, financial framework and geographic priorities.” The company told OWJ, “We believe that there are still good pathways to delivery in our UK portfolio and we are assessing our options for taking the projects forward.”
