The safety of seafarers and the protection of the environment remain central to Intercargo’s mission as it enters 2025, according to its newly appointed chairman, John Xylas
The Greek shipowner, who succeeded Dimitris Fafalios as head of the International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners, emphasised in his New Year’s message that 2024 was a transformative year for the bulk carrier sector. He highlighted the resilience demonstrated by shipping companies in the face of significant challenges.
In its annual review, Intercargo identified various issues impacting shipping operations, including geopolitical conflicts in the Red Sea, piracy and armed robbery at sea, and the pressures of the ’green’ and digital transition.
Despite these challenges, Mr Xylas expressed confidence in the shipping industry’s collective efforts, stating, “Our commitment will drive innovation, promote sustainability and safeguard the welfare of those who make our industry possible.”
Key developments in 2024
A standout achievement for Intercargo in 2024 was the launch of the Dry Bulk Centre of Excellence in partnership with RightShip. This independent, not-for-profit organisation aims to reduce operational incidents, enhance operational standards, and promote best practices in the dry bulk sector.
Another significant development was the revision of RightShip’s policy regarding the age-triggered inspection timeline. Initially, the organisation announced on 10 October a reduction in the inspection threshold from 14 to 10 years, to be implemented in two phases. However, following extensive consultations with the shipping community and in response to Intercargo’s concerns, RightShip unveiled a revised four-phased policy on 11 December, offering a more balanced approach.
Additionally, Intercargo’s membership reached unprecedented levels in 2024, with 260 member companies from 30 countries. “Our Association’s global influence has never been stronger,” Mr Xylas noted, underscoring this milestone as a testament to Intercargo’s growing impact.
New leadership team
As Intercargo looks ahead to 2025, its leadership team has also undergone significant changes. Mr Xylas welcomed the fresh management lineup, which includes Metaxia Psalti as vice-chair alongside Captain Uttam K Jaiswal, and Dimitris Monioudis and Cesare D’Api, who have taken on the roles of technical committee chair and vice-chair, respectively.
