Japan Coast Guard (JCG) is receiving data from Japanese shipping companies Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), Mitsui OSK Lines and Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) through an internet of things (IoT) platform
500 ships owned and managed by these shipping groups are providing data through the Ship IoT data sharing platform IoS Open Platform (IoS-OP) managed by Ship Data Center (ShipDC).
Detailed operational data is sourced from monitoring systems on board merchant vessels while sailing in the seas around Japan and shared with JCG, which plans to use this extensive data to enhance tidal current prediction accuracy, contributing significantly to marine safety.
All three Japanese shipowners are committed to advancing data utilisation by sharing shipping data via IoS-OP to enhance navigation and cargo operation safety as part of their digitalisation strategies, marine data management and commitment to environmental stewardship.
A ceremony was held on 26 January to sign these agreements with stakeholders including ShipDC representative director and president Yasuhiro Ikeda, K Line managing executive officer Shingo Kameyama, NYK managing executive officer Hisaya Higuchi, JCG director general of the hydrographic and oceanographic department Masayuki Fujita, IoS-OP Consortium chairman Tomoyuki Koyama, MOL executive officer Makoto Yamaguchi and ClassNK director, president and chief executive Hiroaki Sakashita (all in the image above left to right).
