Malaysian OSV builder and charterer secures major order to build two dive support vessels and two first of a kind remotely operated landing craft
Malaysia’s Nam Cheong has secured orders worth US$64.5M to build four offshore support vessels from an “established UAE-based global energy maritime logistics company”. The order is the first shipbuilding contract win in over a decade for Nam Cheong.
The four OSVs include two 60-m dive support vessels (DSVs) and two groundbreaking, 60-m, remote-operated landing craft. The vessels will be built at the group’s Miri Yard in Sarawak, Malaysia and delivered between H2 2027 and early 2028.
Nam Cheong chief executive Leong Seng Keat said he was “thrilled” to secure the order from the “established UAE-based global energy maritime logistics company.” He added “This marks the beginning of the resurgence in demand for our shipbuilding activities after more than a decade.”
While the owner was not disclosed by Nam Cheong, it is believed to be ADNOC Logistics & Services (ADNOC L&S), which previously announced plans to build the remotely operated landing craft to support logistics to offshore facilities and artificial islands. ADNOC L&S did not confirm the order at press time.
In their previous announcement, ADNOC L&S said its planned unmanned vessels, developed by SeaOwl, would be remotely controlled from ADNOC’s centre in Mussafah, UAE, using communications links, and would have satellite-linked control systems supported by artificial intelligence.
