Neste partners with Ahti Pool to ensure FuelEU Maritime compliance and explore revenue opportunities through ultra-low-carbon vessels
Neste has taken a proactive step in navigating the complexities of the EU’s FuelEU Maritime regulation by signing a Letter of Intent with Ahti Pool. This collaboration will ensure compliance for Neste’s EU-exposed fleet while unlocking the potential for additional revenue through its ultra-low-carbon vessels.
The agreement brings Neste’s fleet into Ahti Pool’s growing portfolio, which now manages nearly 250 vessels.
Neste head of shipping Sander Wilgenhof noted the dual benefits of the partnership, stating, “Working with Ahti will be a cost-effective way for Neste’s fleet to fulfil its FuelEU Maritime obligations, while it also enables a possibility to create an additional revenue stream from selling positive compliance balance created with the ultra-low-carbon vessels in our fleet.”
Ahti Pool operates as a neutral compliance pool, allowing member vessels to share the regulatory burden efficiently while leveraging economies of scale.
According to Ahti Pool chief executive Risto Kariranta, “We are excited to welcome Neste’s fleet, and we look forward to working with the global leader in renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel to help Neste create an additional revenue stream from the FuelEU Maritime compliance surplus.”
FuelEU Maritime, the EU’s first regulation to account for greenhouse gas emissions from a vessel’s entire lifecycle, mandates an increasing share of renewable fuels in maritime transport.
Neste’s fleet, comprising dual-fuel LNG and methanol tankers alongside raw material and end-product carriers, exemplifies the company’s investment in low-carbon technology.
The arrangement highlights Neste’s broader strategy to lead in sustainable fuels and renewable energy while optimising its fleet operations under the stringent European regulatory landscape.
By monetising its compliance surplus, Neste exemplifies how sustainability and business viability can align within the evolving maritime sector.
