Mackenzie Marine and Towage named new harbour tug Lillian Mac at Esperance Port, Western Australia, following its arrival from a Turkish shipbuilder
This A$10M (US$6.6M) tug was named by two of the family matriarchs, Margaret Howells and Kathy Bradley after the company’s co-founder, the late Lillian Mackenzie who started the business with husband Don in 1972.
Sanmar Shipyards built this 24-m tug as the first Mark II version of Robert Allan Ltd RAmparts 2400SX design at its shipyard near Istanbul, Turkey.
It arrived in Esperance in March to improve port operations, joining Mackenzie Marine’s existing fleet Hellfire Bay, Shoal Cape and Cape Pasley.
The new class of tug was designed to achieve lower emissions during transit and towage operations.
Lillian Mac, with a beam of 12 m, complies with IMO Tier III emissions standards for minimal SOx and NOx emissions for better air quality in harbours. It is driven by twin Caterpiller V16 engines, has fire-fighting capabilities of 1,200 m3/hr and has accommodation for six people.
Mackenzie Marine and Towage managing director Sean Mackenzie, Lillian’s grandson, said the naming ceremony was one of the most important moments in the company, and family’s, history.
“We began as the first and only tug operator in Esperance 50 years ago, and everyone on board has made a contribution to the Goldfields region,” he said.
When Lillian Mac arrived in Esperance its was immediately deployed to operations as the other tugs were drydocked for regular maintenance.
“It has taken us a few weeks to get Lillian Mac ready for this ceremony and already we have been able to see first-hand what it is capable of,” said Mr Mackenzie.
“This state-of-the-art tug can easily handle the biggest ships while providing better environmental outcomes,” he added. “The end result is it has already proved capable of providing a huge boost to operations in this important port which services the Goldfields region.”
