Sanmar Shipyards has completed sea trials of the first of two harbour tugs it is building for Ultratug’s towage operations in Central America
Chile-headquartered Ultratug will raise its towage and ship-handling capabilities in Mexico with a newbuild tug constructed by Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey.
Sanmar has completed a comprehensive programme of sea trials in Tuzla, Turkey, with this harbour tug, which was known as Bogacay LXXIX during its construction.
This 24.4-m vessel was built to Robert Allan Ltd’s RAmparts 2400SX-MKII design with a 12 m beam, 4.5 m depth and 5.5 m navigational draught.
With trials completed, this vessel will move into final delivery preparations before joining the Ultratug fleet, and sailing to Mexico, where it will be deployed at Lazaro Cardenas Port.
Sanmar said the design was tailored to meet the operational requirements of Ultratug, including the addition of a FiFi1 fire-fighting system and ship-towing winch and line on the forward deck.
“Completing these sea trials is a significant milestone in our partnership with Ultratug,” said Sanmar commercial director Ruchan Civgin. “We are confident it will provide reliable service while supporting Ultratug’s sustainability goals.”
This tug has an astern bollard pull of 75 tonnes, two Caterpillar-manufactured Cat 3516E main engines, each producing 2,200 kW at 1,600 rpm and connected to a Caterpillar’s SCR exhaust aftertreatment system for removing NOx to comply with IMO Tier III emissions standards.
At Lazaro Cardenas Port, it will service container ships using Mexico’s biggest terminal.
Sanmar is also building a Bogacay-series tugboat with similar particulars for Ultratug Colombia. This tugboat will also have a Caterpillar SCR for IMO Tier III compliance and a FiFi1 off-ship fire-fighting system to support emergency response.
The 28th International Tug & Salvage Convention, Exhibition & Awards will be held in Gothenburg, Sweden, in association with Caterpillar, 19-21 May 2026. Use this link for more details of this industry event and the associated social and networking opportunities
