Marine robotics company Ocean Infinity has acquired Red Rock for its technology-enabling autonomous port operations
Ocean Infinity is building a fleet of autonomous vessels to become its Armada fleet for offshore survey and subsea support services, whereas Red Rock develops digital and autonomous solutions for lifting and handling in offshore and port environments.
This acquisition will combine both company’s solutions, hardware, software and technologies for remote and autonomous handling equipment.
Ocean Infinity chief technology officer Dan Hook said this combination will change port operations and shipping through artificial intelligence-enabled, safe and low-emissions movement of vessels and cargo.
“The Red Rock team with their technology-focused and forward-thinking approach to marine logistics are an excellent addition to Ocean Infinity,” he said. “This acquisition is pivotal in the journey towards smarter, cleaner ways of operating at sea.”
The complementary technology will enable the enlarged group to realise its mission of being a leader in marine robotics, with technology and sustainability at its core.
“Across the industry, there’s been much talk about the role that remote technologies will play in the future of ports and shipping as the world looks for ways to reduce its collective carbon footprint,” said Mr Hook.
“Together, Ocean Infinity and Red Rock have all the ingredients to develop next-generation shipping to provide the industry with the ability to operate safely on a global scale, with minimal environmental impact.”
The acquisition expands Ocean Infinity’s footprint in Europe with offices in Norway and Romania, adding to its existing presence in North America, the Middle East and Africa. The enlarged group will employ around 600 people.
“With the drive Ocean Infinity has for sustainable autonomous marine robotics, the fit together with Red Rock is truly unique,” said Red Rock chief executive Christoffer Jørgenvåg.
“Together we are creating a technology platform for the ocean space with capabilities and scale the world has never seen before,” he said. “The combined efforts will ensure our customers are future proofing their investments and operations. With the group’s scale and combined capabilities, our colleagues will have the ability to create innovative technology to create smarter and cleaner operations at sea.”
Red Rock AS is the parent company of Red Rock Marine, RedRock.AI, Red Rock Solutions and StepChange.
Ocean Infinity owns and operates the largest fleet of 6,000-m rated underwater autonomous vehicles in the world. It has six work class remotely operated vehicles and eight unmanned surface vehicles.
