Aker Solutions has clinched a contract from Equinor to tie in two gas fields into the huge Åsgard B floating production platform over the next five years
The Norwegian energy group will install subsea flowlines and umbilicals to tie back the Iris and Hades fields, now combined in the Berling project, to extend the production life of the semi-submersible platform.
Aker Solutions said this is a sizeable contract that it defines as between Nkr0.5Bn (US$48.1M) and Nkr1.5Bn (US$144.3M) and will begin this year with engineering.
Equinor requires Aker Solutions to undertake engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning with offshore construction set to begin November 2025.
Offshore operations will continue with flowlines, umbilicals and subsea infrastructure installed until December 2027, with gas and condensate production due to start in 2028.
Åsgård B has processing facilities for gas treatment and stabilising oil and condensates, with gas exported through a long-distance pipeline to Europe.
“The expected recoverable reserves are estimated to be around 45M barrels of oil equivalent, consisting mostly of gas,” said Aker Solutions executive vice-president and head of electrification, maintenance and modifications business Paal Eikeseth.
“The tie-backs will enable a significant contribution to energy security in Europe,” he said.
Aker Solutions completed front-end engineering and design for this project in August 2022 and continued in an interim phase to further develop scope and optimise the technical solution for the Berling tie-in at Åsgard B.
The project is being managed from Aker Solutions offices in central Norway, with detailed engineering, procurement and shop engineering executed by Aker Solutions’ Trondheim office with support from Bergen and Mumbai, India.
Subsea lines and facilities will be constructed and prefabricated at the company’s yard in Egersund, Norway.
Berling is located on the Halten Bank in the Norwegian Sea about 23 km south-east of the Åsgard production infrastructure.
This is the third consecutive tie-in project to Åsgard B for Equinor and Aker Solutions, following the Halten Øst and Smørbukk Nord projects.
“Together, these projects constitute a significant portfolio of modification projects at Åsgard B where existing infrastructure is being utilised,” said Mr Eikeseth.
