A Turkish steel producer and shipbuilder will construct its own ASD tugboat to a design by a Dutch naval architect
İÇDAŞ will begin building an azimuth stern drive (ASD) tugboat at its shipyard in Çanakkale for towage operations in ports after signing an agreement with Damen Shipyards.
Once completed, this 28-m tugboat will be used to assist ships in the two harbours İÇDAŞ operates in Turkey.
This vessel will be built to an ASD Tug 2813 design under the Damen Technical Co-operation (DTC), with Damen providing İÇDAŞ with a vessel design and licence package. It will have a beam of 13 m, a bollard pull ahead of 83 tonnes and up to 80 tonnes astern.
“We are further strengthening our collaboration with Damen through the construction of this ASD Tug 2813,” said İÇDAŞ board member Necati Aslan.
“Damen’s proven expertise in high-performance tug design and project support continues to align with our long-term objectives in shipbuilding and tug construction.”
These ASD 2813 tugs have a top speed of 13 knots, a draught of 6 m, gross tonnage of 388 gt, and capacity to store 89 m3 of fuel oil.
“This initiative not only enhances our capabilities in delivering advanced and reliable vessels, but also contributes to the development of Turkey’s maritime industry,” said Mr Aslan.
“We are confident the successful delivery of this vessel will exemplify reliability, durability and efficiency in service.”
İÇDAŞ operates the ports İÇDAŞ 1 and İÇDAŞ 2 on the Sea of Marmara. İÇDAŞ 1 has 1,655 m of berthing space, sufficient to accommodate between 12 and 20 vessels, while the other port has 624 m of berthing quaysides.
The Turkish owner has previously taken delivery of tugboats from the shipbuilding group, with Damen Shipyards Galati delivering two tugs to İÇDAŞ in 2002. The two parties have maintained a good relationship, leading to this latest contract.
With DTC, Damen provides tailored support for the local construction of its designs. Since the beginnings of DTC in 1977, some 1,500 vessels have been constructed at shipyards worldwide.
İÇDAŞ is a family owned company and is the largest private steel producer in Turkey. It operates in various industries including energy, shipbuilding, logistics and port operations.
