Eneco and Shell, through their joint venture Ecowende, have been granted a permit to build 700-MW of offshore wind capacity at the Holland Kust (West) Site VI (HKW Site VI) area in the Dutch North Sea
The HKW Site VI wind energy area is 53 km off the Dutch west coast. Two sites in the area were tendered earlier this year, HKW VI and VII. In November 2022, Oranjewind Power II, a subsidiary of RWE, won the tender for HKW Site VII.
Netherlands Minister for Climate and Energy Policy Rob Jetten said of the latest award, “The plan presented by Ecowende shows what we can do to design windfarms that work with nature.
“Nature and offshore wind can go well together. That is necessary because there will need to be many more offshore windfarms to be able to supply sufficient green energy.”
Benefiting the environment was an important criteria used in the assessment process for HKW Site VI. The design of the winning windfarm is ‘nature-inclusive,’ including an area where wind turbines are widely spaced so that birds can fly safely between them.
A range of piling techniques will be used on the site to minimise the impact on marine habitats of future projects and artificial reefs will be installed on the seabed.
Shell executive vice president global renewable generation Thomas Brostrøm said the Ecowende design aims to minimise impacts on birds, bats and stimulate underwater marine life. It includes wildlife corridors and natural reef structures on the seabed. “The result demonstrates our commitment to offshore wind in the Netherlands and the energy transition. It also shows how governments can use offshore wind tenders to incentivise wider benefits for society through qualitative assessment criteria,” he said.
Construction of the windfarm is expected to start in 2024 and to come online in 2026.
