Greek seaborne LNG imports rose sharply in the first half of 2025, with the United States maintaining its position as the country’s leading supplier
According to data from Greece’s National Natural Gas System Operator (DESFA), 27 LNG carriers were unloaded at the Revithoussa LNG Terminal, up from 12 during the same period in 2024. These vessels delivered 14.7 TWh of LNG – representing a 64% year-on-year increase.
The United States led all exporters to Greece, supplying 11.9 TWh, nearly doubling its exports from 6.1 TWh in H1 2024. Nigeria followed with 1.4 TWh, while Norway and Algeria rounded out the top suppliers.
As Riviera reported in January, Greece’s LNG imports hit a record high at the start of the year. In 2024, Russia had ranked second behind the US as a key LNG supplier. However, DESFA data shows this dynamic has shifted significantly in 2025.
Meanwhile, imports via the Alexandroupolis FSRU reached just 1.0 TWh by January 22, when regasification services at the terminal were temporarily suspended. The FSRU is expected to gradually resume full operations starting mid-August.
According to an analysis by The Green Tank based on DESFA data, LNG accounted for 45% of total fossil gas imports into Greece, surpassing Russian gas imports via the Sidirokastro entry point, which held a 40% share.
DESFA’s LNG truck loading service at the Revithoussa Terminal also saw continued growth. In the first half of 2025, 273 LNG trucks were loaded – up from 104 during the same period last year. This corresponds to 81.7 GWh of energy transferred, compared with 30.7 GWh in H1 2024 – an increase of approximately 166%.
Strong natural gas consumption
Greek natural gas consumption rose by 12% year-on-year in the first half of 2025, reaching 34.6 TWh, compared to 30.8 TWh during the same period in 2024.
Total domestic demand, including exports, climbed to 37.5 TWh, a 20% increase from 31.2 TWh in H1 2024. Notably, natural gas exports through the Sidirokastro and Nea Mesimvria interconnection points surged to 2.9 TWh, up from just 0.4 TWh the previous year – an increase of more than 550%.
