MBNA Thames Clippers has started working towards constructing a vessel operating on alternative fuel – and should be operating one within three to four years.
The river Thames ferry operator has commissioned consultants to look at alternative fuel options and chief executive Sean Collins told LNGWS's sister publication PST that it was “very much at the top of the agenda”.
He said: “We see CNG as very much in the near future and are continuing to push engine manufacturers and look at what they are able to do and who is doing the most development. If someone could commit to me tomorrow with CNG or LNG, we would love to work with designers, the shipyard, class and the MCA to deliver an alternative-fuelled vessel, this is very much at the top of the agenda.
He said that he would be “very surprised” if they were not operating one in the next three to four years, and singled out how he would like to work with Wight Shipyard Co, which is currently building two new catamarans for Thames Clippers, on an alternative-fuelled vessel. “It is even more important to work with a local yard and develop and support through the process, working together to deliver a safe and viable concept.”
