Classification society Korean Register has awarded an approval in principle (AiP) to South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for its smart ship technology
SHI gained this AiP for implementing cyber resilient ship and onboard systems based on international class and IMO requirements. Resilience and security will be applied to ICT technology on smart ships that have connectivity to online monitoring, services and applications.
Cyber threats such hacking and ransomware are an increasing risk as the integration and digitalisation of operational technology and information technology systems accelerates.
To address this, the International Association of Classification Societies introduced UR E26 and E27 unified requirements for enhancing the cyber resilience of ships and onboard systems. These requirements are set to become mandatory for ships contracted for construction on or after 1 January 2024, and it covers ICT technology and cyber-security solutions.
Since October 2022, Korean Register has developed design and verification methods for implementing cyber resilience based on UR E26 and E27, collaboratively with SHI.
This partnership was formed to proactively meet IACS’s mandatory guidelines and reach this goal of an AiP for cyber resilience, which goes beyond safeguarding ships against cyber threats to include minimising the impact of security incidents to ensure operational safety.
Korean Register provided SHI with technical advice on ship cyber resilience application technology, including security functions and network design for ship operational systems. It contributed to securing the base technology for applying cyber resilience to ships built by SHI in South Korea.
“The security of ships built by SHI will be further enhanced through this certification, which includes security application technology for cyber resilience of essential systems in ships and on ships registered by Korean Register,” said SHI chief technology officer and executive vice president for engineering operations Haeki Jang.
Korean Register will continue to strengthen its technology and certification capabilities for ship cyber resilience, said the class society’s technical division executive vice president, Yeontae Kim.
