Second Siemens Gamesa turbine certified ‘typhoon-resistant’

In addition to T-Class wind speed compliance, Siemens Gamesa is working with local authorities and certifying bodies to ensure other applicable standards required in the Asia Pacific region are taken into consideration. The company is part of the international Alleviating Cyclone and Earthquake challenges for windfarms joint industry project that aims to align turbine design methodologies with the requirements of extreme environmental conditions.

Siemens Gamesa has also been developing its offshore platform to operate in high and low ambient temperatures, reducing thermal limitations and increasing annual energy production while preserving turbine lifetime.

It anticipates that features such as these will contribute to the further expansion of its portfolio in the offshore wind market in the Asia Pacific. In Japan, for instance, the government has set a target for 30-45 GW of offshore wind capacity to be installed by 2040.

Siemens Gamesa executive general manager offshore Asia Pacific Niels Steenberg said, “We plan to leverage our experience to deliver the highest possible standards to support the broader adoption of offshore wind in the region.”
