Carbon Collectors’ collaboration with Value Maritime, if successful, would result in construction of a CO₂-neutral tug fleet
The joint project will see emissions-mitigation technology firm Value Maritime and CO₂ transport and storage specialists Carbon Collectors undertake a conceptual design study for a new tug fleet for Carbon Collectors with CO₂ capture on board.
The MGO-fuelled tug vessels would use Value Maritime’s carbon-capture technology, making the fleet of Carbon Collectors newbuild tugs CO₂-neutral from the start of operations, according to the two companies.
The concept design teams will examine the required installed power of the diesel generators on board, the estimated capex and opex for the project, discharge options for the captured CO₂ and solutions for its unloading and underground storage.
If successful, the tugs will use Value Maritime’s Filtree system, which filters both air and water and includes an integrated carbon-capture system.
"The CO₂ capture feature removes and stores carbon from the vessel’s exhaust gases and uses it to charge a CO₂ battery which can be offloaded and reused to facilitate the growth of crops, used to enrich future fuels or it can be safely stored until needed," the businesses said.
Carbon Collectors have said they want to contribute to reducing global CO₂ emissions by 6M tonnes per year by 2030. The company aims to collect, transport and safely store the CO₂ they capture in empty offshore gas fields in the southern reaches of the North Sea.
“As a company aiming to speed up the reduction of CO₂ emissions, we also want to make sure our own fleet contributes by becoming carbon-neutral as fast as possible. For years to come, carbon-neutral fuels will not be available in amounts large enough to fulfill demands, so carbon capture and storage seems the only feasible option in the short and medium term," Carbon Collectors technical director Haije Stigter said.
"We’ve conducted many studies in relation to larger seagoing vessels but now Carbon Collectors are affording us the opportunity to apply our carbon-capture expertise to tugs, extending the reach of our sustainable shipping solutions," Value Maritime director and co-founder Christiaan Nijst said.
