Svitzer Europe has purchased one of the world’s first reverse stern drive (RSD) tugboats from Damen Marine Services for operation in the Humber area
Following the end of a charter period for Innovation, Svitzer purchased the RSD tug and renamed it Svitzer Eleanor. This 2018-built vessel will join fellow tugs in service in Immingham, including Svitzer Josephine, Svitzer Kathleen and Svitzer Laura.
Innovation was one of Damen’s first RSD tugs and International Tug & Salvage attended its sea trials and demonstration in Southampton, UK after its completion in 2018.
Adding Svitzer Eleanor demonstrates Svitzer Europe’s continuous fleet renewal programme in the UK and further strengthens its services in the Humber hub.
“Svitzer Eleanor will play a crucial role in further enhancing our operational capability in northern England and will help us to solidify our position as the leading towage services provider in the Humber for the long term,” said Svitzer Europe northern UK cluster managing director Ita Dickson.
“The acquisition of this tug is proof of our commitment to the region,” she said.
Svitzer Eleanor is an RSD 2513 tug with 75.3 tonnes of bollard pull with an overall length of almost 25 m, beam of more than 13 m and top speed of 13 knots. This comes from a pair of Rolls-Royce Power Systems-supplied MTU 16V 4000 series M63L main engines.
The compact tug is highly manoeuvrable and suited for operating in the large tidal estuary waters of the Humber.
Svitzer Eleanor has accommodation for four people and has additional layers of insulation, floating floors and a sound-absorbing ceiling in the wheelhouse.
The superstructure is mounted to reduce noise levels to improve working conditions on board and increase crew welfare and comfort.
