Nikolas Martinos-led Thenamaris has commenced 2025 on a strong note, bolstered by a series of tanker and bulk carrier deliveries as part of its extensive fleet renewal programme
In the first days of the new year, Ultramax bulk carrier Seahawk joined the fleet, completing a four-vessel bulk carrier order placed in 2022 with HD Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding.
On the tanker front, MR2 vessel Seaexplorer was delivered from Jiangsu New Yangzi in China. This ship is part of a resale deal secured by Thenamaris in 2024 for two MR2 tankers. The second tanker, Seamerit, is scheduled for delivery in May 2025, according to vessel data platform Equasis.
The company also made strides in the Aframax/LR2 sector, with Seatrust, Seamagic and Seascout – constructed at HD Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding and China’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding – joining the fleet between 2-6 January. The company is poised to receive five more Aframax tankers from the two prominent shipyards later this year.
With the completion of its current newbuilding programme, Thenamaris will approach the 100-vessel mark. According to its website, the company currently operates 92 ships, comprising 50 tankers, 26 bulk carriers, eight LNG carriers, six LPG carriers and two container vessels.
Notably, apart from the newbuildings, the owner has maintained an active presence in the sale and purchase market, strategically offloading older tonnage while acquiring younger, more modern vessels.
History and profile
Founded in 1972 in Piraeus, Thenamaris began operations managing a modest fleet of eight dry cargo vessels. Over the decades, it rapidly expanded its footprint through strategic acquisitions and newbuilding projects.
In 2011, the company diversified into the gas carrier market with the establishment of Thenamaris LNG. Nine years later, it further expanded its portfolio by launching Thenamaris ConBulk to manage container ships and bulk carriers.
The company’s storied history is closely tied to its founder, Athina (Nounou) Martinou, a prominent figure in Greek shipping. Ms Martinou passed away in October 2024 at the age of 97.
