The innovations and features of the world’s first fitness-focused cruise ship design
The décor and interior concepts of Blue World Voyages’ first cruise ship design reflect the themes of wellness, sports and fitness.
The cruise ship will have a deck dedicated to wellness, including the largest spa facility per passenger at sea. There will be another deck dedicated to sports and fitness, including a bike fitting station, the world’s largest ocean-going functional training and strength conditioning facility and a golf school.
Tomas Tillberg Design has completed the preliminary study and design of the concept. It has designed the public spaces, cabins and owner residences, with Poggi Design also designing some of the owner residences.
Tomas Tillberg Design partner and vice president Nedgé Louis-Jacques opens up about the design to Passenger Ship Interior & Refurbishment Review. “The ship is about active lifestyle, wellness and being healthy. This is centred around the design concept.”
Tomas Tillberg Design vice president Debbie Breslauer adds, “The owner was very collaborative and used to own a gym, and is therefore knowledgeable about what activities he wanted on the ship, and together made it all work beautifully.”
She adds, “We are excited to create a ship that has so many wellness aspects, with organic food [including a Farm to Table restaurant] mixed in with a wellness programme.”
She explains that new and current sports activities are brought together, with private break-out activity rooms and a large gym.
Ms Breslauer says, “It is unique – a guest can sign up with a trainer, where all their information and ideas about improvement are taken, and then they will be given a training programme and the spa features, with its infinity pool, are tied into the whole physical element.”
A central part of the ship will be the gym. Ms Louis-Jacques says, “The two-storey gym will have all the latest state-of-the-art equipment and be very spectacular.”
One storey will be focused on high-intensity interval training and include life cycle and spin classes, while another level will include all the machines. Ms Louis-Jacques says, “The gym is enclosed but all walls and partitions are glass. This gives an element of excitement, by being able to look up from the first storey or down from the second one and see what people are doing, or being able to look up and see a huge TV screen and elemental lights.”
A sports highlight of the ship will be the indoor, simulated golf course. Ms Breslauer explains that the design includes a juice bar so that guests can have a drink and watch friends play. “Simulated cubicles give a true golfing feel without being outside,” she adds. Another key feature is the ship’s floating marina, which has a netted swimming area, and from which guests can use paddle boards and kayaks.
A hugely innovative feature of the ship is the owners’ club residences. Buyers will be able to purchase the luxury one- and two-bedroom residences aboard.
Ms Breslauer says, “One of the beautiful aspects of the ship is that we designed 35 apartments of both single storey and two storeys. The two-storey apartment is unlike any other on the water.
“When you come in, it has a very high atrium that expands up two levels, and the windows to the outside rise two decks high as well. So, when you come into the foyer this huge glass panel makes it possible to look straight out to the ocean and a wide balcony. As you go up the u-shaped stairs, you can look all the way to the horizon, and from the bedrooms upstairs you can view both the atrium and the sea. The residences include storage for golf clubs and bikes."
Ms Louis-Jacques adds, “There is a spectacular view when you first enter the residences; I don’t think there is any cruise ship with such a two-storey experience as this one.”
Every standard suite has a balcony, along with a spa-like bathroom that connects it to the ocean. Each suite is designed with comfort and sustainability in mind. To emphasise comfort, Ms Louis-Jacques expresses that the colour palette of the cabins is “organic, contemporary and modern”.
Ms Breslauer adds, “The colour schemes in the cabins will include serene blues, greys and natural colours to let the outside be the real landscape of the vessel.”
“One of our favourite parts of the design of this ship is all of its unique spaces and features that create the experience."
Tomas Tillberg Design is excited to continue developing the project.
Ms Louis-Jacques says, “We are excited to bring the project to fruition.”
