Ocean Group has acquired Samson Tugboats Inc to increase its fleet operating in western Canada
The purchase of Samson and its two tugs operating in the Vancouver area bring Ocean Group’s fleet working in the state to six vessels.
Ocean Group acquired several major contracts in British Columbia in March 2020, including one for harbour towing services in the Port of Vancouver.
To service the contract, the business brought in three modern tugs, including newbuildings from Vietnam. A fourth tug was added after more than a year of operations.
Ocean Group president and chief executive Jacques Tanguay said the larger fleet was needed to meet growing requirements from shipping in the Vancouver area.
“We share Canadian values of respect and integrity with Samson Tugboats and we intend to focus on the continuity of our activities, in a sustainable development perspective,” said Mr Tanguay.
“The two harbour tugs will become part of Ocean Group’s fleet and will meet the needs of our clientele in the Vancouver area,” he said.
“This acquisition is in line with our desire to have high quality standards for our clients.”
Since 2020, the Quebec City-headquartered Ocean Group has been looking to expand further in Western Canada through its subsidiary Ocean BC Towing.
Samson’s acquisition reflects Ocean’s objectives to continue its expansion on the Canadian west coast and supports its commitment to develop on a global scale.
Samson was focused on providing towage around the Fraser River in British Columbia, which has now become part of Ocean’s operations.
Ocean said it is exploring new international markets and has not ruled out further acquisitions, saying it has set up a new business entity to explore the potential of providing marine services in Colombia.
