Piriou in France has developed a crew transfer vessel (CTV) for the offshore wind industry that has a hydrogen hybrid propulsion system
The hybrid propulsion system is intended to reduce emissions during operation.
Piriou was one of three winners responding to a call for notification of interest in an offshore wind innovation challenge managed by wpd and the Brittany maritime cluster, Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique.
The company said the hybrid CTV was designed based on its experience in crew transfer vessels for the offshore oil and gas market and its experience designing and constructing 27-m and 22-m CTVs for the offshore wind market.
The hydrogen hybrid CTV is designed to transfer 24 people. It has a length overall of 27 m and breadth overall of 9 .7 m. It has a maximum speed of 25 knots and can carry 5 tonnes of cargo.
The vessel is equipped with two 1,000-kW main engines and two 140-kW fuel cells.
The hydrogen for the fuel cells is stored in a 20-ft container.
