Royal Caribbean Group is investing in seafarer training on its fleet of cruise ships to improve safety through a remote learning platform
The shipowner signed a long-term agreement to deploy Napa’s e-learning digital technology to enhance stability on its global fleet of 64 vessels. Napa will provide the relevant software and training materials to both Royal Caribbean’s shipboard and shoreside crew, estimated to be 500 participants every year.
Under this agreement, e-learning will focus on training people on Napa’s stability and safety management software. Online courses will enable crew members to become proficient users of Napa Stability and provide them with core knowledge on ship stability principles – intact stability, damage stability and strength – components of the training needed by every seafarer.
This agreement comes as Royal Caribbean invests in technologies for reducing its environmental footprint and carbon emissions.
The whole cruise industry is working towards decarbonisation, including considering exhaust gas purification, air lubrication and voyage optimisation systems. These new decarbonisation systems will be considered in stability calculations and in the e-learning.
Napa e-learning has been implemented directly into Royal Caribbean’s training platform and is available anytime and anywhere on a cloud facility. This gives crew members opportunities to access classroom-like interactive training with others taking the same course and share their experiences in real time.
The Napa e-learning tool requires no hardware installation, upgrades or maintenance costs.
“For shipping’s decarbonisation transition to succeed, it must focus not only on technology but also recognise that people are at the very heart of it,” said Napa director of customer relations for safety solutions Annettys Acosta.
“As the industry develops and deploys a range of alternative fuels, clean technologies and digital solutions, it must also ensure crews have the proper training to handle these new systems and processes.”
Napa recognises the importance of delivering stability and safety training to the cruise shipping sector.
“Considering there are approximately 250,000 seafarers on cruise ships alone, the cost implications of training could be massive,” said Ms Acosta. “We are dedicated to delivering comprehensive training that will make switching to new advanced software smoother and cost-efficient.”
