Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in South Korea has secured approval in principle (AIP) from three different class societies for its ‘ECO-WTIV’ wind turbine installation vessel
The ECO-WTIV is a low-emissions design that uses liquified natural gas (LNG)-powered engines and fuel cells. It has secured AIP for the design from ABS, DNV and Lloyd’s Register.
The company describes the ECO-WTIV as ‘compliant with new emissions targets’ thanks to the adoption of eco-friendly technologies including the LNG-fuelled engines and solid-oxide fuel cells.
The turbine installation vessel is also designed to be fitted with a battery-based energy storage system.
Taken together, said Samsung Heavy Industries, this can reduce the ship’s CO2 emissions by approximately 50% compared to existing, conventionally-powered designs.
In December 2020, SHI partnered with Hyosung Heavy Industries to develop a cost-effective jacking system for the ECO-WTIV.
SHI has growing experience in the construction of turbine installation vessels, having delivered three units after becoming the first shipbuilder in South Korea to receive an order to build one in 2010.
