RWE has reached an important milestone at the Triton Knoll offshore windfarm in the UK, with the first generation of electricity
The generation milestone follows the successful delivery of onshore and offshore electrical infrastructure on schedule. Turbine installation began in January 2021.
Triton Knoll is located more than 32 km off the Lincolnshire coast. It is jointly owned by RWE (59%), J-Power (25%) and Kansai Electric Power (16%), with RWE leading on construction and long-term operation and maintenance on behalf of the project partners. The total planned investment amounts to approximately £2.0Bn (US$2.8Bn).
First generation is being followed by a period of testing and commissioning, while the remainder of the 90 Vestas V164-9.5 MW turbines are installed.
All of the turbines are being handled at Able Seaton Port in Teesside where RWE, through Triton Knoll, has invested in establishing new turbine-handling capabilities.
Further investments in the region include creating a new operations base in Grimsby, which will generate up to 70 jobs.
Installation is being carried out by DEME, using the jack-up vessel Wind Osprey, provided by Cadeler.
With turbine commissioning due to be completed later in 2021 and final project completion expected in early 2022, Triton Knoll will have an installed capacity of 857 MW.
