US Coast Guard secures emergency response vessel support
A US-based owner has gained a contract to provide a support vessel to transport supplies, equipment and personnel to US Coast Guard cutters
Bordelon Marine has won a contract to provide a support vessel to the US Coast Guard (USCG) to transport supplies, equipment and personnel to its cutters operating in the western hemisphere.
This contract is under the USCG’s homeland security cutter-ocean (HSC-Ocean) initiative designed to strengthen fleet readiness.
USCG will use commercially operated vessels to provide logistics support to its cutters in the Caribbean, along US coastlines and around Latin America while they remain at sea, minimising disruption to missions.
It expects this commercial vessel programme to deliver faster, more effective fleet support by preparing operators for rapidly deploying leased commercial assets to augment the USCG’s existing fleet.
“HSC-Ocean will enhance our ability to control, secure and defend US borders and maritime approaches,” said the USCG.
It will also support the USCG’s emergency response to maritime accidents and provide support for vessel salvage where required.
“The initiative is designed to provide a rapid, adaptable and effective way to deliver logistics support to high-demand, multi-mission cutters,” said the USCG.
Bordelon Marine will provide a fully crewed commercial vessel, Connor Bordelon, operated by civilian mariners, under the direction of a USCG crew.
“As demands on the US Coast Guard continue to grow, we must find innovative ways to sustain our fleet and keep our crews focused on their missions,” said USCG deputy commandant for operations Vice Admiral Nate Moore.
“HSC-Ocean will help us deliver critical supplies and personnel more efficiently while increasing the endurance and effectiveness of our operational forces.”
Bordelon will be responsible for vessel operations and maintenance, while embarked USCG personnel will co-ordinate logistics and support mission execution.
“The initiative will inform future USCG logistics and sustainment efforts while helping the service evaluate new approaches to support cutters operating far from homeports,” said the USCG.
