The Verti-Go consortium led by SeaTwirl has secured €15.0M (US$17.5M) from the Horizon Europe programme for a demonstration programme using a 2-MW floating offshore wind turbine
In a statement, Sweden-based SeaTwirl said the design phase for the project is due to be completed around the end of 2026, and be followed by construction and operations phases due to be completed by the end of 2029.
The Verti-Go project, led by SeaTwirl, was selected as a successful applicant for funding under the EU’s ‘Demonstrations of innovative floating wind concepts’ in May 2025, and was invited by Horizon Europe to participate in the grant preparation stage of a funding call. The grant preparation phase has now been completed and an agreement signed with the consortium, enabling the project to start as planned on 1 October 2025.
The Verti-Go project is led by SeaTwirl as technical co-ordinator, with University College Cork as project co-ordinator. The consortium also includes: EDP Centre for New Energy Technologies (EDP CNET), a subsidiary of the EDP Group; Greenov; Next Fabrication; Sub Connected AB; Sowento; RSTER; PNO; Bureau Veritas; and Zorlu Enerji. The project advisory board includes DNV.
SeaTwirl chief executive Johan Sandberg said, “After months of preparation, the Euro Horizon Europe funding call has been secured by the Verti-Go consortium.
“With the legal framework in place, we can now kick-off the project and begin the journey towards installing and demonstrating a full-scale SeaTwirl turbine. This is an extraordinary milestone for SeaTwirl.”
SeaTwirl is a unique floating vertical-axis wind turbine designed for use in deep water. It has a low centre of gravity, enabled by integrating the tower and the spar into a single rotating unit. This means the floater uses less steel than conventional floating solutions, is easier to access for servicing and maintenance, which results in lower through-life costs, and the ability to use locally-sourced vessels.
