The oldest existing shipping company in Bremen, Germany, is investing in satellite communications to enhance crew welfare
F A Vinnen & Co will start deploying bonded satellite communications on container ships to improve connectivity for its seafarers and operational requirements.
The German owner and crew manager has partnered with Inmarsat Maritime to trial NexusWave on its fleet of mid-size container ships to provide a home-like connectivity experience to seafarers.
NexusWave combines communications over Inmarsat’s geostationary orbiting (GEO) satellites for Ka-band and L-band connectivity, Eutelsat OneWeb low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation, and mobile phone networks long-term evolution (LTE), into one resilient, bonded and secure solution.
This trial will begin with NexusWave being installed on two container ships, with plans to add more if this is successful.
“Crew welfare is our utmost priority, and providing a home-like internet experience on board plays an increasingly important role in keeping our crews happy and motivated,” said F A Vinnen & Co controlling manager Daniel Harms.
“Recognising the growing traffic demand on the commercial side and the need to ensure a steady availability of high-speed internet, we have chosen NexusWave to upgrade our present system.”
Vinnen, which is the oldest shipping company in Bremen, will use NexusWave to address increasing internal data transfer volumes and demand among crew members for home-like internet experience on its container ships.
NexusWave uses the combined capacity of all available network underlays simultaneously to provide high-speed and reliable global connectivity with an average network availability of over 99.9%.
LEO satellites provide global coverage overlapping the GEO secure connectivity enabling Vinnen to have unlimited data to provide a wide range of applications to crew members, such as web browsing, streaming, gaming, video and voice calling, messaging and social media access.
Inmarsat, a Viasat subsidiary, said NexusWave eliminates unexpected charges and includes enterprise-grade cyber security and a care programme with 24/7 worldwide technical support.
Vinnen, founded in 1819 as E C Schramm & Co, owns nine feeder container vessels totalling around 40,000 TEU capacity, mostly in the 3,800–5,000 TEU wide-beam class. These are chartered under time charter agreements to major global liner companies such as Maersk, MSC, CMA CGM, Hapag Lloyd and COSCO.
Vinnen also provides ship and crew management services, operating vessels on behalf of external owners and via its affiliated company in Manila that handles crewing and cadets.
