Wärtsilä is boosting its cyber-security offering with the launch of a new Fast Recovery tool to allow for business continuity in the event of cyber-security-related incident and will use the Tenable OT Security platform to manage its operational technology (OT) asset inventory collection
The tool will be made available as part of Wärtsilä’s NACOS Platinum System, which provides maritime bridge and automation services to shipowners, operators and shipyards.
In case of cyber-security incidents such as ransomware attacks, the Fast Recovery tool is meant to assist business within 30 minutes, meaning users can return to operations with little or no disruption.
While the company did not provide indepth information as to how this will work, it claims the system will enable customers to “reduce reputational and financial damages, minimise downtime, and recover the bridge and automation systems’ direct and indirect costs.”
Guidelines provided by the tool will allow a ship’s crew to initiate a recovery process in the event of a cyber-security incident, giving them autonomy over restoring automation, navigation and control systems.
Wärtsilä head of product for automation systems Christian Skytte said the new tool represents “a crucial investment for all shipowners, operators and shipyards looking to improve the cyber resilience of their operations.”
“The goal of the NACOS Platinum system has always been to provide customers with the necessary measures to mitigate and respond to potential threats that could endanger lives at sea. Now, through our Fast Recovery tool, customers will be better equipped to quickly and efficiently manage risks, so they can ensure business continuity of their operations at sea.”
Royal Caribbean Group worked with Wärtsilä in developing the Fast Recovery tool, by providing operational use cases.
The cruise giant’s lead engineer Christopher Stein said, “This is the first system in the integrated navigation bridge market to fulfil many of the rigorous requirements of the new IACS E26 and E27 cyber-security standards which will be required for all new buildings after 1 January 2024”.
Royal Caibbean and Wärtsilä showcased Fast Recovery together at the recent Seatrade Cruise Global exhibition in Miami.
Wärtsilä has chosen cyber-risk management firm Tenable’s Tenable OT Security platform to manage its OT asset inventory collection. Using the Tenable OT Security platform, Wärtsilä said it will be able to address customer questions around asset delivery, reducing supply chain risks and taking a proactive stance on cyber security.
The Tenable service will also be extended to Wärtsilä’s customers, allowing them to visualise their own OT environments.
According to Tenable, Wärtsilä is seeking to address three key challenges: automated asset inventory collection, compliance reporting and OT vulnerability reporting.
Previously, this was a manual collection process, with the data being reported using spreadsheets and susceptible to errors and inconsistencies both in the way it was collected and reported.
“We tested multiple tools and found Tenable OT Security to have great discovery via vendor specific protocols. The workflow of the tool was a great fit for our own needs but, beyond that, we realised using the solution allowed us to develop and introduce new services to benefit our customers, too,” Wärtsilä cyber security expert Ross Bailey said.
Tenable OT Security is a modern industrial security platform allowing users to identify assets, communicate risk and prioritise action all while enabling its IT, security and OT teams to work better together.
The detail provided includes firmware versions, serial numbers, anomalous network activity and will let Wärtsilä report more accurate and consistent information to customers about their OT environment including information about current project delivery while also detailing cyber risks within their environments allowing customers more proactive risk management.
Tenable general manager of OT, Amir Hirsch noted that as OT networks continue to grow more complex, it introduces new risks to be addressed.
He said, “Understanding the nuances within the organisation and broader industry, is key to implementing an effective OT security strategy. All teams – those tasked with securing IT and OT – should have complete visibility of the entire infrastructure and relevant interdependencies. This means knowing exactly which assets exist, their configurations and full situational awareness of both sides of the house, empowering the security team to see and understand the big picture.”
