In this episode of the Maritime Today podcast, Van Aalst Marine & Offshore managing director, Jeroen van Lakerveld discusses the evolution of bulk handling systems, highlighting their critical role in offshore logistics, and advances in filtration and energy efficiency.
Employed on platform supply vessels and anchor handling tug supply vessels, bulk handling systems are specialised, high-pressure pneumatic systems designed to store and transfer dry bulk materials like cement, barite, and bentonite from ship to rig. These systems typically use pressurised tanks, air compressors, and piping to fluidise and convey the cargo efficiently.
Mr van Lakerveld emphasises the need to work closely with ship designers early in the OSV’s design. “We always try to accommodate the best possible volume within the smallest space requirement from the beginning,” he said.
Family owned, Van Aalst Marine & Offshore has been refining bulk handling systems for decades, the company has delivered more than 1,000 systems.
