Maturing alternative fuel pathways for tankers: the main opportunities and challenges

Today our industry uses ~300 million tonnes of fossil fuel oil to produce ~12.6 EJ of energy, emitting more than 1 gigatonne of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We must replace fossil fuel oil with low-GHG alternatives to reach our decarbonization goals. An introduction to the main alternative fuel pathways and their maturity levels as well as overview of the main opportunities and challenges for alternative-fuelled tankers will be presented including:

  • Main alternative fuels
  • Fuel pathway maturity mapping
  • Fuel production, bunkering and logistics

How and why Ammonia gives tankers a CO2 advantage

The first ammonia-fuelled tanker is due to launch in 2025, giving tankers an advantage in reducing CO2 emissions and meeting GHG regulations. Class societies are approving ammonia-fuelled tanker designs and engine OEMs are identifying the engineering changes needed to use ammonia as a fuel in an internal combustion engine.

SESSION 4: OPERATORS PANEL DISCUSSION: INNOVATION AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY VERSUS NEW FUELS FOR PRODUCT AND CHEMICAL TANKERS

Switching vessel operations to new fuels has a degree of complexity and cost. Considerable scaling up in production – at pace - is also required if green methanol, green hydrogen and green ammonia are going to be available in the volumes needed to support the wider sector’s decarbonisation. Our panel of tanker operators share their views on where we are in the green transition and what their maritime decarbonisation strategies are prioritising:  energy efficiency and innovation, fuel switching or a combination of the two.
