Port of Amsterdam is looking into the viability of operating zero-emissions vessels in the harbour for ship handling, security and pollution control
This is part of the port’s strategy to be a leader in emissions reduction and sustainability, says Port of Amsterdam programme and project manager Patricia Haks.
She says European environmental regulations influence investment decisions in this major port, during an interview at Riviera Maritime Media’s Maritime Hybrid, Electric & Hydrogen Fuel Cells Conference 2023 in Bergen, Norway.
Ms Haks said future generations of workboats and tugboats operating in the port will need to operate on lower emissions to minimise pollution in the port. She expects vessels to be flexible and operational 24/7, which could be challenging for electric vessels that need downtime to recharge.
“We are currently investigating the feasibility for an emissions-free harbour patrol vessel,” she explains. “Our goal is to be emissions free – and this is behind our decisions and strategy. The Port of Amsterdam wants to become one of the leaders in becoming emissions free and a sustainable harbour.”
