Third R-class vessel enters the water in Leer as owner Erik Thun emphasises European build quality, crew welfare and long-term efficiency
Erik Thun Group has named the third vessel in its R-class series Thun Renew. The tanker was launched at Ferus Smit Shipyard in Leer, Germany, and follows Thun Resource and Thun Reliance.
The company positions the R class as ’resource efficiency’ tonnage designed for performance, reliability and reduced environmental impact.
Thun Tankers chief commercial officer Joakim Lund noted the vessel is part of the group’s long-term plans. He stated, “We always plan and design for the vessel’s full lifespan. By taking the best, leading and most sustainable investment decisions available today, we make sure the R class remains relevant for more than 20 years of operation.”
The R-class concept in the release links sustainability to simplicity, functionality and reliability. The design features a hull and onboard systems intended to minimise environmental impact while maximising cargo intake, and it highlights crew welfare through safer, healthier and more rewarding working conditions aligned with Scandinavian values and long-term partnerships.
Erik Thun Group managing director Johan Källsson noted the design emphasises client growth while reducing climate impact. He said, “A vessel is a real success when it can help our clients grow their business while simultaneously reducing their climate footprint. That’s the balance we’ve achieved with the R class. Efficiency without compromise.”
The announcement frames European construction as a strategic choice. Mr Lund added that building in Europe ensures quality, reliability and sustainability with delivery close to the market, describing it as a decision that offers confidence to the company and its clients.
Thun Renew carries the name conferred by its godmother, e-coaching profession Marga de Mol, partner of Captian Frank van der Elsen, recently retired from MF Shipping Group.
