Opportunities for vessel owners in a booming industry

This year, the Offshore Wind Journal Conference focuses on the fast-growing demand for offshore wind vessels and the key technical trends in vessels for the offshore wind market.

Vessel types and trends to be examined by industry experts including installation vessels, service operation vessels and crew transfer vessels.

Our panellists will look at how many vessels of each type will be required, in what timeframe, where they are required and where they will be built. Key equipment for the vessels will also be examined.

Recognising the particularly fast pace of growth in the US market, where there is now around 35 GW of offshore wind capacity in the pipeline, the conference will also reflect on the particular needs of the American market, the effect the Jones Act might have and how US vessels might differ from those built elsewhere.

Another massive trend in the offshore wind sector is the growth of unmanned vessels, so the conference takes an indepth look at what uncrewed vessels can and cannot do, their advantages and the regulatory setting for their use. Initial applications of unmanned vessels include underwater survey, but they are already being touted as delivery assets for other unmanned units, such as unmanned aerial vehicles and robots that will undertake maintenance on turbines.

Offshore wind is all about green energy and it is only right the vessels serving the industry are ‘green’ too. So the final session of the conference looks at how vessels for the offshore wind sector can be made more fuel efficient and reduce emissions.

Many owners are adopting ‘hybrid’ propulsion with batteries but other options are being examined, from alternative fuels to offshore charging, and this session will provide an indepth understanding of what the options are. It will also look at the many innovative designs and hullforms that have come to market in recent months – from catamarans to surface effect ships to hydrofoils and vessels that ‘fly’ over the water.

Jesper Skjong, Market Analyst, Fearnley Offshore Supply

09:30 Analysing demand by region, regulaton and the supply chain

  • An analysis of the most important markets, including Europe, the US and Asia and ROW
  • How legislation, local content, the supply chain and shipbuilding expertise affect markets
  • Designing/customising vessels for new markets
  • Challenging assumptions about regional requirements

Dr Ferenc Pasztor, Associate Director, Maritime Strategies International

09.50 The US: a case study – a market with unique challenges and requirements

  • How do the demands of the US market differ from those elsewhere?
  • What do US owners expect of a vessel?
  • What does the Jones Act really mean for the US offshore wind market?
  • Where will American offshore wind vessels be built and where will designs come from?

Charlie Papavizas, Maritime Practice Partner and Chair, Winston & Strawn

10:10 Q&A

10:30 Networking coffee break in the exhibition area sponsored by DP Marine & Assurance

SESSION 2: DESIGNING, BUILDING AND OPERATING NEXT-GENERATION OFFSHORE WIND SHIPS

This session will focus on technology and design trends for the three main vessel types in the offshore wind market, the drivers of those trends, and how the design and construction of installation vessels, SOVs and crew transfer vessels needs to evolve to meet future requirements.

11:10 Installation vessels: handling larger turbines and foundations

  • How large are next-generation turbines and what does this mean for vessel and equipment design?
  • What kind of loads will cranes need to handle and how high will they have to lift?
  • How vessel designers are responding to the challenges of larger and larger foundations
  • What are the challenges of loading, transporting and installing multiple large foundations?

Vegard Vollsaeter, Senior Broker Sale & Purchase - Newbuilds, Clarksons Platou Offshore Renewables

11:30 Why the new SWATH Groenewind is a game changer for the SOV market

  • SOV’s technical challenges to ensure optimized access, safe operations and comfortable accommodation in a cost efficient manner
