The leading liner shipping trade group the World Shipping Council (WSC) has appointed Joe Kramek as its new president and chief executive
The WSC Board appointed Mr Kramek to succeed outgoing chief executive John Butler when he retires at the end of July.
Mr Kramek is vastly experienced, having served as WSC’s director of US Government Relations and spent 28 years as a commissioned officer with the US Coast Guard, where he spent time at sea and as the chief of maritime, international, and environmental law. Mr Kramek led the US delegation to IMO’s Legal Committee during his Coast Guard tenure.
Commenting on his appointment and noting his predecessor’s contributions which WSC termed “extraordinary”, Mr Kramek said, "I am deeply honoured to assume the role of president and chief executive at the World Shipping Council, building on the foundation laid by John Butler. Together with the dedicated team at WSC, I look forward to addressing the evolving needs of the shipping industry and continue driving positive change.”
Mr Butler served as president and chief executive of the WSC since 2015, originally joining as general counsel for the association in 2010. He led the organisation through the turbulent pandemic period and the supply chain crisis.
“It has been a privilege to lead the World Shipping Council during a time of significant growth and complexity in the maritime sector,” said Mr Butler. “I am confident that with Joe’s extensive experience and committed leadership, WSC will continue to flourish and develop even further, and I wish him, and the entire team continued success in the years ahead.”
Mr Butler will work with his successor in the months ahead to execute the succession plan before Mr Kramek assume his duties on 1 August 2024.
The World Shipping Council added that it extends its sincere appreciation to Mr Butler for his service and congratulates him on his retirement.
