ASRY’s successful completion of its first ship recycling project laid the foundation for its ongoing progress in this area. The company continues to strengthen its role as a centre for ship recycling in the world, supporting both environmental and industry development.
The Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company (ASRY), Arabian Gulf’s Leading Maritime Hub, is leading efforts in environmentally responsible ship recycling and green practices.
With operations supervised by the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE), ASRY ensures its activities are carried out under strict environmental guidelines, showcasing its focus on sustainable and practical solutions.
ASRY has implemented measures to cut energy consumption, reduce wastewater output, and minimise emissions by recycling steel from ships. As demand for recycled materials grows and regulations on the steel industry tighten, ASRY is positioned to address these challenges by working closely with shipowners, its own facilities, and steel producers to create an efficient recycling process.
Chief among these endeavours is ASRY’s dismantling of the Wan Hai 165 containership with remarkable success as part of its recycling programme. This follows ASRY’s inclusion of ship dismantling and recycling as part of the company’s core activities in recent years.
ASRY’s CEO, Dr Ahmed AlAbri, emphasised the company’s forward-thinking approach: “ASRY’s modernisation efforts continue to drive us forward. Environmental sustainability is central to our future operations. Having met the highest international standards, we are now able to offer vessel owners an environmentally responsible, cost-effective, and sustainable solution for managing their end-of-life maritime assets.”
Dr AlAbri also highlighted the strategic advantages of the initiative, noting its alignment with nearby steel production facilities, which create shared benefits for both industries. ‘With ASRY’s longstanding expertise, prime location, and technical capabilities, coupled with its proximity to leading steel producers, we are uniquely placed to provide global shipowners with a practical and ethical solution for vessel disposal,’ he added. ‘We will work together to position Bahrain as a leader in the green steel recycling industry.’
ASRY’s collaboration with Elegant Exit Company (EEC) has brought expert environmental knowledge to the Gulf, strengthening the company’s ability to dismantle vessels responsibly and in line with strict environmental standards. This partnership not only raises the bar for ship recycling in the region but also supports efforts to adopt greener practices in industry. The recycling of the Wan Hai 165 containership stands as a clear example of ASRY’s practical approach to making sustainability a core part of its operations.
This programme strengthens ASRY’s role in the international ship recycling industry while supporting Bahrain’s green ambitions. ASRY’s approach, which blends its ship repair expertise with environmentally sound recycling methods, builds on the region’s strengths in sustainable practices. The initiative shows how economic progress and care for the environment can go hand in hand, giving Bahrain and ASRY a leading role in shaping a cleaner future for the industry.
This followed ASRY’s compliance with international standards such as the Hong Kong Convention, the European Ship Recycling Regulation, and ISO 30000 certification. Since 2020, ASRY has enhanced its capabilities, focusing on environmentally sound methods to process steel and other materials.
These activities not only reinforce ASRY’s standing as a leader in responsible ship recycling but also bring economic benefits by generating trade through the resale of recycled materials. This approach complements wider goals of sustainable industrial growth, while encouraging responsible practices across the maritime sector.
ASRY’s successful completion of its first ship recycling project laid the foundation for its ongoing progress in this area. The company continues to strengthen its role as a centre for ship recycling in the world, supporting both environmental and industry development.
