Petronas notches third break-bulk LNG STS transfer, cites increased demand

Malaysia International Shipping Corporation (MISC), whose parent company is Petronas, sent the cargo using its 153,000-m³ capacity Seri Bijaksana vessel, to transfer 80,000 m³ of LNG to Teekay’s Polar Spirit LNG carrier and 62,000 m³ to the MISC-owned Lerici LNG carrier.

The break-bulking STS transfer was the third such transfer Petronas has completed in the region, and the company said it is a signal of increasing demand.

In a statement, Petronas executive vice president Adif Zulkifli said “This could only be achieved through unique business models which allow us to customise our solutions according to our customers’ requirements; especially when the market is moving towards mid-sized cargo requirements, or smaller parcels of LNG.”

Petronas said the STS was a collaborative effort involving stakeholders including Sabah Ports Authority, MISC, Teekay LNG Partners LP, Asian Supply Base, Argo Engineering, Eastport Marine, KASI (Malaysia) and others.

Petronas completed its first LNG STS break-bulking operation in June 2018 and the second in April 2019.
